Burns, an American Civil War hero and politician from Illinois. Burnsville is geographically located midway between Minneapolis and Saint Paul along the Mississippi River valley and is bordered by Clearwater Township to the north, Marshall Township to the east, Maplewood Township to the south, and White Earth Township to the west. The first settlers of what would become Burnsville were white men who arrived in 1854 from Illinois looking for land on which to build a farmstead. They named their new settlement after General James K. Burns (1814-1881), an American Civil War hero who had fought with distinction at Pea Ridge and Monmouth before being elected as a Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War in 1869–71 and then as a Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President in 1875–77 when he succeeded Stanton as president of the United States. In 1886,burnsville became one of twenty townships within St Louis County when it was created from parts of Iron County; it remained unincorporated until 1954 when it reapportioned into its present borders under state law following results of a referendum held that year.
