Burnsville is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 54,786 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-most populous city in Minnesota and one of its five Twin Cities metropolitan areas. Burnsville is home to Mayo Clinic, University ofMinnesota's Lindenwood Campus and several small businesses and factories. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with hot summers and mild winters. The first Europeans to visit what is now Burnsville were fur traders from Russia in 1819, who named it after Pyotr Ivanovich de Terek, Count of Wrangel's mission station on the upper MISSISSIPPI River. The name "Burnsville" was probably given by Captain John Aiken while he led a party upstream along the river in 1825 during his explorations as part of General Richard Butler's army westward through Canada into Illinois Territory; that year Aiken named some points near present-day Burnsville "Aiken's Ferry" because he had found it necessary to crossriver more than once for supplies coming up from downriver settlements. In 1829 Captain James Belding surveyed much of central Minnesota for Doane & Co., a fur trading company founded by Andrew Dickson Onondaga County sheriff James Mclntyre Doane Sr.. In 1836 Burnett married Miss Emma Ladd; they had two children: Charles Elijah Burnett (1837-1920) and Jennie May Burnett (1840-1927). Burnet also operated sawmills at Oneida Lake until 1850 when he built his first gristmill there which still stands today called Burnett's Mill. He also began operating a post office at this location in 1835 under the name "Oneida". In 1840 burnet married again to Sarah Jane 'Sallie' Doherty and they had four additional children: Harry Garret Burnett (1841-1920), Annie Louise Burnett (1843-1914), Julia Margaret Burnett (1845-1924), Minnie Belle Burnett (1847-1945). In 1861burnett moved his mill from Oneida Lake to what is now downtown Burnsville after purchasing land from three partners who owned adjoining tracts - Hennepin County Judge Daniel Wohlstadt, Abraham Jahnke and Wilhelm Klinghoffer - for $1 per acre ($72 per mile). In 1865 Burnette became jointly proprietor with fellow businessmen George Stephenson Polk Jr., John Prentice Baird and Hiram Sibley Steele with ranches extending into adjoining counties - most notably Grant County where their holdings stretched all the way to Clearwater Bay - making him one of America's earliest ranching entrepreneurs Accordingly when President Andrew Johnson ordered all private firms within reach of Union troops stationed around Minneapolis to contribute 10% or more towards military expenses during the American Civil War – including those amounts going towards arms manufacturer Armour – Burnette quickly became president & CEO of local armory business First National Armory which produced over 100 cannons for Union forces He resigned as president & CEO due to health problems following an attack by Confederate sympathizers aboard ship USS Richmond off shore on July 8th 1863 but continued as chairman until 1865 when he sold interest in First National Armory back to Armour . After departing office Burton founded Brush Brothers Furniture Works on Main Street adjacent to First National Armory providing quality furniture since 1862 . Burnsville entered World War I supportively thru its production values being among largest U.S cities producing munitions such as rifles & machine guns for soldiers fighting overseas’ . When war ended Armistice Day 1918 Local citizens raised money Sorrounded by destroyed buildings plus flour mills burned resulting in loss estimated at $153M dollars only 2/3rds made back without harm or casualties .. Manufacturing activity resumed mainly through importation especially china products although soap manufacturing continued until 1922

The community was founded in 1854 by white settlers from Wisconsin as a stop on the Overland Road between St. Paul and Minneapolis. Burnsville grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near railroads and railroad mills, as well as its access to irrigation water supplies and land for farming. The community experienced economic decline during the 20th century, but has since regained some of its former prosperity through various industrial development projects and new residential construction.
The town of Burnsville, Minnesota was founded in 1858 by Isaac Hayes. The first post office was established in Burnsville on November 7, 1858. The town grew rapidly due to the lumber industry and it got its name from General Alexander Burnside, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1865, the United States Congress passed a bill that made Burnsville an incorporated city. The city had a population of 30 people when it became an incorporated city and it had a population of over 100 people by 1930.During World War II, the city played an important role in the war effort with its munitions manufacturing plants. In 1951, the City Council voted to annex neighboring cities of Plymouth and Maplewood because they were growing too fast and their boundaries were not meeting needs for services such as sewerage or water supplies.Burnsville is now considered a suburb of Minneapolis with a population of over 105,000 people
