In 1868, when James A. Burns purchased the land that now makes up Burnsville, he was a young man with just over 25 years of experience in the lumber business. He had come to Minnesota from Michigan to found a new town and start a new chapter in the history of this great state. When he first saw the natural beauty of this region and its people, Burnsville was born. Since then, Burnsville has grown into one of the most important communities in Northern Minnesota. With its many businesses, churches, schools and other community resources, it is hard to imagine life without Burnsville. The strong sense of community that exists here has helped make it an attractive place to live and work. And no wonder - since James A. Burn's vision for this community started small and grew gradually over time into what it is today. The story of Burnsville begins with two men: James A.Burns and his brother John Fenton Burnett Jr.. Both gentlemen were born in New York City in 1795 and became involved in business early on their careers there as entrepreneurs. They took part in numerous ventures together until 1868 when they both decided to move westward to become pioneers in what would eventually be known as Northern Minnesota - a region still rich in unceded land and full of potential for growth. James A.'s purchase of 640 acres (225 hectares) along current-day County Road 9 led him to settle down on his property where he built his home - called "the farmstead" - soon after moving into it himself from his previous quarters near Detroit Lakes east of Battle Creek on Lake Superior (now portion of Hastings). It was here that James met Mary Ann Potts who would later become his wife; they married on October 2nd, 1869 at the old Methodist Church located north-west cornerof present day First Street & Lyndale Avenue (thenLyndale Ave.). As their families multiplied over time they began leasing space within buildings which continue today as various businesses connected by corridors or alleyways: The Old Post Office Building (1892), Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (1902), Masonic Temple building (1907), Presbyterian School(1910), Masonic Lodge No 2 Building(1920) – all while maintaining their close ties within their homes which remain some Of The Most Intimate In History! The Burnetts also founded the first paper mill northwest of Minneapolis back when “the prairies” were still virgin territory! Today's Paper Mill Complex operates outof three sites including burnside Rd., 7th St., & S Dakota Ave.- Making them Historic Landmark Properties!

Burnsville is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Burnsville was founded in 1856 by John A. Burns as a farmstead on the outskirts of Minneapolis. The town became an agricultural center and rural community with a strong light railway presence after the opening of the first electric streetcar in 1892. In 1930, Burnsville enacted its first zoning ordinance to create city boundaries for the town and annexed nearby Bloomington, Minnesota; this led to financial challenges for both towns when it came time to update their governments since Bloomington had more residents and cultural attractions than Burnsville did. The downtown district has experienced significant redevelopment over recent decades with new buildings erected along Broadway Avenue, around First and Second Streets NW, and near Lake Calhoun in violation of city ordinances that bars development within a certain radius of Ball State University and Park Nicollet Island. The ballfields at South Field (now Nicollet Island) were also once used by Burnsville High School football teams before they were bought by neighboring Bloomington Mapleseed Farms in 2002. The name "Burnsville" comes from John A.'s father's grocery store which opened on what is now Main Street in 1854
On October 3, 1851, a group of nine men from Burnsville founded the town of Burnsville. The men were John A. Burns, James Shields, George Weems, Elijah Hicks, David Webber and Solomon Thomson. The town was named for Major General Andrew Jackson Burney who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Commissioner to Mexico.
