Brooklyn Park is a small town located in Minnesota, United States. It was chartered on March 3, 1854 and named for Brooklyn, New York City. The population of Brooklyn Park was 1,415 at the 2010 census. The town was founded on a farmstead that had been purchased by George Washington Hanna from Pierre Pecquet in 1849. The first settlers were Methodists and they built their homes around the corner from the Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today. The first store in Brooklyn Park was opened by Hennepin County Sheriff John Fenton in 1860. In 1865, Rev. Simeon Bemis organized a church congregation and started to build a schoolhouse on what is now Main Street. On July 15, 1870, the first election took place in Brooklyn Park and Democrat John Ritchie won against Republican incumbent Ebenezer Wills with over 80% of the vote. Brooklyn Park was incorporated as a village on April 24, 1912 by an act of the state legislature under the name MinnPost ville ( borough). This name change came about because it became apparent that there wasn’t enough post office space within the new village limits to accommodate all of its residents who desired to receive mail from their homes within Brooklyn Park itself as well as those living outside of its boundaries (the original village included parts of nearby Eden Prairie and Maplewood). It should be noted that despite having status as a municipality – with all manner of civil rights & abilities – no services were provided by Village Hall until 1978 when satellite telecommunications made it possible for villagers to access municipal services such as fire suppression & streetlights through ADSL service rather thandialing ‘9-1-1’ or going door-to-door begging for help (a tradition continued even into recent times via resident volunteers providing basic phone service!). Brooklyn Park’s unique moniker notwithstanding, since Borough status did not automatically confer any form of local elected officials or governance enjoyable privileges or immunities other than those typically accorded municipalities such as Police Chief & zoning Administrator; tax rates were set at levels above those levied upon unincorporated villages without similar governing authority; mailbox stickers reading “Borough” never appeared inside Borough Council Chambers… Although borough officials enjoyed immunity from criminal prosecution while serving in their respective offices; members thereof could be sued civilly for wrongful performance OF official duties during pendency thereof without fear of suit being filed…. Despite this lack Of formal governance structure; some semblance Of order DID exist due largely To frequent visits Byingham [sic] Municipal Officer who assisted With Social Services Programs (& lectured At School); latter occupant thru succession process assumed full powers And responsibilities Asst Municipality Manager effective January 1st 2014
