It has a rich history that can be traced back to when it was first settled by Swedish farmers in 1881. early settlers from Sweden were looking for land that would be able to support their families while they waited for permission from their government to move westward into Canada after being expelled from Sweden during the Napoleonic Wars (1814-1815). They found an ideal spot on the banks of Missouri River where they built a log cabin and started farming what is now known as Brooklyn Park Township. The first post office opened in 1883 and was called "Brooklyn Prairie". It moved to its current location on Nebraska Avenue near Interstate 94 in 1912 because there wasn't enough space at nearby Madison Avenue Post Office which had been built just two years earlier! The name change came about because many residents living near downtown St Paul thought that "Brooklyn" sounded like a Bronx borough in New York City! The original street grid still remains today with blocks named after pioneer farmers such as John Ahearn who farmed along Nebraska Avenue between Federal Boulevard and Interstate 94 until his death in 1924; Orville Lange who lived on Illinois Avenue between I-94/Nebraska Ave and Broadway until his death also aged 95 years old; George Greipel who farmd along I-94 east of Broadway until his death also aged 95 years old; HJ Sweitzer who farmd along I-94 south of Broadway until he died also aged 95 years old etc.). In 1912, there were only 5 businesses closed due to economic conditions caused by World War I including 2 shoe stores (one closed due to fire), 3 meat markets (2 failed due to pandemics), 6 grain elevators - 3 closed because of war rationing & 2 closed permanently for lack of customers (1 due to air raid damage & 1 due to Hurricane Agnes); 2 druggists (& 1 grocery store) all located outside the city limits; no Bank then or now; few cars & trucks on main streets...This time period represented quite some accomplishments considering how limited resources were at that time! During World War II more businesses reopened including: 3 car dealerships (3 reopened thanks to military production quotas), 4 radio stations (1 reopened due credit extension given by VFW post office), 5 stores (*2 boarded up during WWII but have since been restored), 7 telephone companies*, one electric company*, one water works*(*these are not listed here because most businesses have since been replaced or shut down.) *These are not listed here because most businesses have since been replaced or shut down.�
