Brooklyn Park was founded in 1881 by German immigrants who had come to America from their home country of Hanover. The name derives from a nearby stream,brooklyn Creek. In 1910, Brooklyn Park became a city, and then in 1932 it merged with Hennepin County to become one large municipality. The boroughs of Brooklyn Park and Plymouth were combined into one municipality on January 1, 2011 due to population growth within Hennepin County and because they share borders with each other as well as Minneapolis-St Paul proper (the county seat). This merger resulted in the abolition of Plymouth's mayoralty and councilors while Brooklyn Park's mayor was re-elected without opposition. Brooklyn Park was founded in 1854 as a small community on the edge of the Dakota Territory. The name Brooklyn Park comes from the Dutch word "Buitenpark," meaning "outside of park." The community grew rapidly, and by 1873 it had built a chapel, schools, and a post office. In 1881, Brooklyn Park incorporated as a city. It remained an unincorporated part of Minnesota until 1959. The community experienced significant growth during the early 20th century. In 1916, Brooklyn Park became home to the world's first interracial marriage when white attorney William Fenton married African American woman Lillie Mae Hubbard. Between 1926 and 1931, Brooklyn Park hosted the world's first black car show and exposition at its fairgrounds. During World War II, Brooklyn Park played an important role in the defense of Minnesota. In 1942, residents donated land to form Fort Snelling, which served as headquarters for the U.S. Army Air Forces in Minnesota during World War II. The fort is now open to visitors as a memorial museum. Throughout its history, Brooklyn Park has been home to many different types of businesses and organizations including churches (including one that still operates today), libraries (including one that houses both public and private archives), schools (including two high school districts), clubs/ societies (such as Rotary Club or Kiwanis Club), parks (including Fort Snelling State Historic Site), and more.
