The community has experienced several waves of growth over its history: In 1916 it had just under 1,000 residents; by 1960 it had more than 10,500 people; and by 1990 it had more than 25,000 residents. In recent years much development has taken place in both the borough and suburban areas around it due to commuter traffic from nearby cities and as a result of annexation by neighboring Bloomington into Minnesota state in 2013. This has led to increased security concerns for residents as well as concerns about how these developments will impact water use and other environmental problems throughout the boroughs around it

The town began to grow rapidly after World War II when demand for housing increased in postwar America. The construction boom that followed created many new jobs and drove prices up significantly in the town center. By 1990, Brooklyn Park had reached its peak population with 37,000 residents and an economy that included manufacturing and retail businesses along with public services such as schools and fire departments. However, growth stopped abruptly around 2000 due to low birth rates and changing demographics in favor of suburbs outside the city limits of Minnesota; however, pockets of active commerce persist today including a small shopping district centered around Main Street and several restaurants serving locally sourced foodstuffs as well as some high-end stores like Macy’s & Sears on North Fourth Street near Interstate 94 (I-94). Brooklyn Park is still home to a significant number of people who trace their ancestry back to European immigrants who settled there during the 1800s; most notably Polish settlers who arrived during what is called “the Great Migration” from Europe following World War I which saw millions flee persecution by communist regimes worldwide. Today’s residents are variously affiliated with Lutheranism (76%), Methodism (13%), Islam (3%), Judaism (2%) or Hinduism (1%). Although most residents are white Catholic descendants from Eastern Europe or First American immigrants – both groups make up less than 1%of total Brooklyn Park population – recent waves have brought in African Americans dating back to slavery days; Latinos also comprise a sizable minority among current residents though they have not traditionally filled this role in local history or culture.
