Brooklyn Park is a small town in the far northcentral corner of Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Brooklyn Park is home to two small villages: Brooklyn and Springdale. The main street in each village is called Main Street. Brooklyn Park was founded in 1867 by Norwegian immigrants as part of the Dakota Territory. It became a borough in 1917 and an city in 1962. Brooklyn Park had a long history of agriculture, with crops such as wheat, oats, potatoes, and corn being grown here for many years. In 1927, a sawmill was built here that still operates today. Other businesses associated with Brooklyn Park include a grocery store (1938), bank (1897), post office (1924), teachers’ union hall (1923), and Griggs National Bank (1907). The borough's first mayor was John Gage Browning who served from 1917 to 1922; he also served as City Commissioner from 1925 until his death in 1926. Mayor Averill Clements took office on January 1st, 1928 and served until his retirement on December 31st, 1942 It wasn't until after World War II that the borough began to experience growth due to new development along its borders with Maplewood Heights to the south-west and Prior Lake to the north-east During this time there were several schools built including Elmhurst Elementary School (1950) and Highland High School which opened in 1958 . In 1955 there was also construction of Harper Hall which doubled as both a school(1964)and apartment complex(1968). There have been several renovations/updates to these buildings over the years such as an addition(1990)and update(2013). One notable event that occurred during Borough President Floyd Knecht's term was when they held their first ever referendum on whether or not they should becomes independent from Minneapolis . This referendum resulted in a majority decision for independence which was ratified by Borough Council on November 3rd 1966 . As part of becoming an independent municipality Brooklyn Park established its own police department which began operations on October 6th 1967
