It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is adjacent to Stinson Beach on the north and east coasts of Lake Superior on the south. The first people known to live in Brooklyn Park were Paleo-Indians who hunted game near present day Brooklyn Park in what is now Ramsey County and Hennepin County around 12,000 years ago. In 1827, James Kapp founded a post office called "Brooklyn" in what is now Brooklyn Park after purchasing land from French Canada for $1 million (a price which has been disputed). The first settlers arrived during the 1830s and by 1840 had built over 100 homes with an average house size of . The city was named for John Mifflin, an Englishman who bought land here in 1854 as part of a treaty between Great Britain and United States before America's admission into Confederation as a new nation. The name may have been inspired by Mifflin's home village of Newington in Northumberland, England where he had married Alice Thorburn (the daughter of Revd George Thorburn, vicar generalof Durham) two years earlier. When Minneapolis/StPaul became a municipality on November 3, 1903 (), Brooklyn Park was annexed into that municipality as well (). However, it would still maintain its own government until 1960 when it became part of the newly created city of Minneapolis/Saint Paul through incorporation ordinance resulting from efforts by Mayor John Gregoire (). During World War II much development happened within Brooklyn Park due to military activity surrounding or taking place there such as USS Constitution decommissioning nearby in 1945 and plutonium production at nearby RCA Labs during this time; however much focusing took place outside of its borders with Minneapolis/StPetersburg becoming home to both American forces stationed there (1946-1948) as well as Russian troops based there since 1944 (1960-1991). On July 1st 1959 Borough President Ditlev announced changes to municipal government within Minneapolis/StPetersburg with annexation being seen as less likely given that neighborhoods like Richfield Hills were also annexed into that municipality but with Village Council having more say within their respective wards while borough presidents had more power overall; this change would later be repealed following referendum results against annexation on November 3rd 1961 (). As result all borough presidents other than Gregoire were eliminated leaving only Ditlev who continued his role until his retirement effective December 31st 1984 (). Since consolidation all services located within the boundaries described above have come under one single umbrella organization called Metropolitan Council Services Incorporated (); this includes firefighting services which are currently managed by MN Fire Fighters Union Local 539 while police services fall underMN Police Chiefs Association Local 737 which also provides ambulance service for various hospital locations managed by MN State Patrol paramedic units along with Streets Department maintenance for streets within borough limits

Brooklyn Park was founded in 1887 by Norwegian immigrants and named for the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of New York City. Brooklyn Park is located on the edge of a rural area that formed around the community of Brooklyn Run which began as a small farming village in 1874. The town was organized from part of Brooklyn Run in 1898. The first post office was established in Brooklyn Park on January 1, 1889. In 1902, the first telephone line linking Brooklyn Park with other towns in Wright County was installed. Brooklyn Park also became home to one of two dairy farms owned by Hennepin County when it merged with Dakota County in 1924. In 1942, during World War II, the local military made use of an airfield near the town and 500 residents were relocated to nearby Dakota City while another 400 residents remained housed at the old farm until 1945 when they returned home to their homes after being relieved from service. The community has experienced many changes over its history; some examples include: becoming an agricultural center during prohibition; becoming a city during Prohibition; and becoming an suburb of Minneapolis following World War II. Today, Brooklyn Park retains much of its early industrial heritage including a substantial quarry working force that continues to be active today within limited production capacity due to technological advances as well as environmental concerns affecting many aspects of their industry including groundwater depletion and climate change impacts which have led them to consider plant closures or mothballing some operations altogether over time in order not impact employee productivity or company image adversely impacting overall economic viability).
