Brooklyn Park was founded in 1867 by Danish immigrants and became a municipality in 1903. Ammunition production began here in 1907 and ended in 1961 when all ammunition manufacturing was transferred to neighboring Rochester, Minnesota.

Brooklyn Park is bordered by the city of Rochester to the north, Bloomington to the east, and Alexandria Township to the south. The city proper has a total area of 25 square miles (77 km2). The first settlers in what would become Brooklyn Park were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1824. They named their land "Nieuw Amsterdam" after their new home in Holland. In 1875, this name was changed to "Brooklyn Park", after New York City's Borough of Brooklynitte (now part of Manhattan). In 1887, Brooklyn Park became a municipal unit within Minneapolis and was annexed by that city as its northern border increased from 22nd Street on the west side of downtown Minneapolis to 8th Avenue on its eastern edge near Cedar Lake. In 1912, following annexation by St. Paul, Brooklyn Park became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system under one administration until it merged into that city's government once again in 1975 as part of larger changes within Minneapolis-StPaul following World War II which saw many neighborhoods moved into central business districts across town while sections of South Side were established as streetcar suburbs around Readyville Road/Marymount Drive/East Hastings Boulevard near Perimeter Mall close off access from central business districts for residents living there outside those areas limits without services or easy access thereto (and some residents still do so today). After much discussion, it was decided to name the new settlement after one of Canada's most famous ethnic communities – Brooklyn (Hungarian: Bárkásztól) because many of its founders had come from that region, and Park because it had been designated as an international border between Ireland and Scotland by then British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel in 1802. The town began to grow quickly due to its location close to major transportation routes and businesses such as mills, churches, farms, and breweries; however, it struggled during World War II when many residents left for military service or fought in Europe.
