Brooklyn Center, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Brooklyn County. The population was 21,633 at the 2010 census, down from 24,977 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The city has been inhabited for about one thousand years and first appears on historical maps in 1784 as "Bonnerville". In 1837 it was renamed after John Denton Brooklyn, an American president and explorer who had explored parts of what is now Canada and United States during that year's Dakota Sioux War (1836-38). In 1846 it became a town when its citizens voted to incorporate as a village under the name Brooklyn Center Township. The name change came about because then-Mayor George Prentice wanted people to think of the new community as "Brooklyn Heights" because of its high rise buildings near downtown Minneapolis. The boroughs of Brooklyn (now inside Manhattan), Queens (now on Long Island), Staten Island, andMatternet added their own townships to form New York City in 1898 so that all areas east of Eighth Street within Borough Park would be served by one municipality with common services including schools, police and fire departments, parks, libraries and other public amenities. In 1916 Brooklyn Center became Brooklyn County by merging with Hennepin County which had been formed two years earlier from parts of Ramsey County west of Seventh Street on Lake Minnetonka northwestward to Bloomington/Normal and eastward to Stroudsburg/East Mankato/Watkinsville along First Avenue south from Superior Avenue until acquisition by Minneapolis in 1924 created a contiguous metropolitan area including most or all western Twin Cities counties north of I-35W with Farmingdale being included in 1984; this created significant economic challenges for BCT which lost much farmland associated with manufacturing production before suburban sprawl began taking hold around rural Milwaukee suburbs such as Waukesha etc., but still has some jobs in transportation equipment manufacturing among others despite heavy loss rates during recent decades due largely to automation; nevertheless BCT remains one largest municipally controlled housing development authority within any major metro area outside NYC or Los Angeles having total population over 10K today while large tracts remain undeveloped both within city limits as well as beyond them mostly located around Saint Peters University & surrounding neighborhoods

By 1865, most of what is now Brooklyn Center had been annexed into Sioux Falls.
