In 1881, the first commercial building in Brooklyn Center was built. The Brooklyn Center Post Office operated from 1881-1885. In 1886, the Brooklyn Center Savings Bank was established. In 1898, the Brooklyn Center Methodist Episcopal Church was erected. In 1899, a flour mill and bakery were built on Third Avenue inBrooklyn Center. The First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at this mill on October 20th, 1899. On December 1st of that year, the regiment's first battle occurred when it fought against a force of Sioux Indians east ofBrooklynCenter. On January 2nd of 1900, the regiment participated in an engagement atButterfly Creek which resulted in one death and seven wounded soldiers
