Brooklyn Center, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Ramsey County. The population was 568 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ramsey County by population size. It is also the second-largest city in Minneapolis-Downtown, with a total population of 953,824 as of 2017. Brooklyn Center is home to two universities - Metropolitan State University of Missouri-Kansas City (Metropolitan) and St. Paul University - and several shopping malls including One America Plaza, Target Field, and Macy's Garden Emporium. Brooklyn Center is bordered by St Paul to the north, Minneapolis to the east, Winnipeg to the south, and Bloomington to the west. The first settlers in what would become Brooklyn Center were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1856. The city was founded on May 5th, 1869 by John Prentice Clarke and his wife Augusta Muhlenberg as a farming community known as "Brooklyn" after their home town of Brooklyn Heights on Long Island in New York City. In 1884, Jens Jensen bought farmsteads near present-day downtown Brooklyn Center for $2,000USD and named it "Jensen's Prairie". In 1906 when Minneapolis became an American city with annexations from Saint Paul County (then part of Dakota Territory), Brooklyn Center's location made it ineligible for annexation into either municipality; instead it became a separate town within Minneapolis called Prospect Heights until 1920 when that name was changed to Brookline Park following a referendum vote by residents. In 1955, three blocks northwest of where Prospect Heights now stands was purchased by developer Ewing Marion Kauffman for $10 million USD including property immediately east of Interstate 94 which he planned to build into a new suburb called Northbrook across from Target Field; however no such development took place and Kauffman sold his interest in Northbrook back to Ewing Marion Kauffman two years later for an additional sum equal to about $1 per share outstanding on December 12th 1957 - thus ending what has been claimed as one of America's largest real estate transactions ever conducted through closed stock offerings). Ida Borenstein designed Barclays Bank Tower –one of only two tall skyscrapers built outside New York City during that period—in 1961 while working at her father-in-law Solomon Lew’s design firm Heroux & Lew Architects (now Moshe Safdie Architecture). The tower replaced an earlier bank building erected in 1910–11 on Third Avenue Northeast which had become too small for Barclays after opening offices there from 1912 until 1928;[7] Kaufman used plans she submitted during her brieforship at Municipal Aviation Authority headquarters adjacent to Harry Kelly Airportnorthwest of downtown Minneapolis as inspiration for his new structure.[8][9] Kaufman also designed Reliance Steel Works buildings located just northwest of downtown Minneapolis across First Street West from Nicollet Mall,[10] also completed 1962. This year marks the centennial of our organization and we are celebrating with a series of events that will help us learn more about our state’s past. In 1916, Duluth voters approved a $200,000 bond issue for the building of Brooklyn Center shopping center on Seventh Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Originally called “Duluth Plaza” it was later renamed after Mrs. John A. Davenport (1868-1951), who donated the land that now provides parking for the center and helped construct it. She also contributed money towards construction of other civic buildings in Duluth such as City Hall (1910) and Riverfront Park (1920). The cornerstone for Brooklyn Center was laid on December 5th, 1916 by Mayor Harry Smedley with mayor emeritus J.M. Macdonald officiating. The city donated an electric carillon which played music all day long during its inauguration ceremony; this event is still commemorated today with a free outdoor concert every summer in honor ofMayor Smedley and City Manager Harry Haldeman each Saturday night from 7pm-9pm at Riverfront Park near First Avenue North
