The city was founded in 1847 by Norwegian immigrants as a post office called Brooklyn Heights. In 1868, it became a city and was renamed to Minneapolis after Minneapolis City Hall had been built there that year. In 1912, Brooklyn Center annexed parts of Stittsboro to form a new city government. In 1965, the city annexed Farmington Hills to become another part of Minneapolis.
