Brooklyn Center, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The boroughs of Brooklyn Center and West Stroudsburg serve as their own municipalities within the city limits. Ammunition production began in 1851 in what is now Brooklyn Center, with manufacturing continuing until 1959 when it was merged into Alcoa's Rochester division. The first factory complex in Brooklyn Center was built on Main Street by Julius Cockerill and his sons John and George Cockerill Sr., who also founded Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company which became J&G Tobacco Company after 1919, eventually merging with RCA Victor Incorporated in 1957 to form CBS Corporation (CBS). Ammunition production began again at Alcoa's Rochester headquarters beginning in 1959 but stopped due to competition from foreign companies that were investing in new technology for ammunition manufacture during this time period including Colt Industries Incorporated (COLT) and Remington Arms Co., Ltd.(RAMCO). In 1961 Alcoa divested itself of its firearms subsidiary J&G Tobacco Company to become Winchester Repeating Arms Co.,Ltd.; however, Winchester Repeating Arms continued to produce ammunition under contract for other businesses such as American Express (AXP) through 1987 when that company merged into Microsoft Corporation (MCDONALD). In 1992 rifle manufacturer Remington Outdoor Brands LLC purchased AXP from Microsoft Corporation; Remington Outdoor Brand Ammunition continues to be made today by Academy Sports + Outdoors, Inc.) During World War II, many businesses closed their doors after the war ended; however, many others reopened due to new opportunities created by American Recovery from World War II which included incentives for companies to retool for postwar competition including increased access to capital markets through government procurement programs like Marshall Plan reconstruction assistance In recent decades there has been dramatic growth in retail sales at local anchors like Cinemark Theaters IMAX theaters while also significant redevelopment projects have taken place near center including One Prudential Plaza which became home to major banks before being acquired by Wells Fargo & Co., additional apartment buildings have been built nearby including Regency Tower which houses healthcare providers FACE/care units belonging to Mayo Clinic Behavioral Health Services Incorporated since 2003 while additional retail development has taken place near Interstate 5 Exit 128 including CVS Pharmacy - now Home Depot - Sears - now Macy's -and JCPenney - now Apple Store . As one of few inner-city neighborhoods within Minneapolis-St Paul that remains relatively intact from its early days as a rural farming community, it also contains significant examples of architecture from that era - most notably Second Empire Revival Style homes located near Nicollet Mall entrancesway (now known as "Plymouth Drive").
