A cotton gin operation started on Nicollet Island in 1865 and rapidly grew into one of America's leading cotton mills; it employed over 1,000 workers until its closure in 1971. In 1907, Brooklyn Center had 12 stores including two grocery stores; today only four remain: G&G Markets at 1300 2nd Ave., Hennepin Mills at 49th Street and Lyndale Avenue Northeast, Valley Grocery at 35th Street Northeast and Dempster Road Southeast. In 1911 Brooklyn Center had 7 schools: 3 elementary Schools (grades K-4), Westminster School (5-8), Park Hill School (9-12) and Empire School(13-18). In 1917 BrooklynCenter had 10 businesses with a payroll of $2 million: 6 banks ($230 million total), 5 insurance companies ($100 million total), 2 ferryboats ($30 million total) & 4 real estate developers ($500 million total). It also has some interesting historical moments such as when on October 14th 1919 representatives from 20 countries gathered for an international conference organized by Pierre Trudeau at nearby Leland College under then President Woodrow Wilson; United States Army Major General Charles Jenkinson led all dignitaries present including First Lady Alice Paul who delivered remarks about democracy being brought to developing countries through this conference while also holding up a model farmhouse designed by architect Ira Mather which still stands today on Nicollet Island next to what is now City Hall Park
