Brainerd is a small city in Minnesota, located on the east side of the state. The population was 9,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by St. Anthony on the north, Falcon Heights to the east, Bloomington to the south, and Alexandria Township on the west. The first settler in what is now Brainerd was John Brainerd in 1836. At that time it was known as Horse Lake (now Hastings). In 1855, a post office was opened at Brainerd with Aiken as postmaster. The name changed to Brainerd in 1857 when William Moulton built a cabin here for his family. One of Moulton's sons founded Minneapolis Cable Company which becameMN Telstar Communications Incorporated in 1984 with headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. In 1907, Mayor Hennepin County voters passed an ordinance providing for public education within city limits without tuition being charged to residents or exported to other cities through private institutions; this functioned as a model for school districts throughout Minnesota until 1938 when city taxes were raised to support public schools statewide. In 1911, City Councilman Charles Howland persuaded then-Governor Millard Fillmore not to veto legislation establishing Technical College ofMinnesota (TCM) adjacent toburnsidehighschoolofBrainerdonthursdayafternoonduringtheFirstLegislativeSessionof1911; TCM moved from its original location on Third Street between Lyndale Avenue and Marshall Avenue into its present building on 15th Avenue South after enactment of State Statute No 2262 (1911). After TCM's establishment, many young men from rural areas attended technical college while working their farms or businesses; these students later founded several large technological companies such as Northern Telecom Corporation and Eastman Kodak Company during World War II. It wasn't until 1978 that City Hall moved from Fourth Street northeast corner First Ave SE into its current site next door to Hastings High School - completing an over 100 year process! Today, Brainerd has more than 12 restaurants and bars including two nightlife venues: Dreams Lounge & Dive Bar (located just outside of town off US Highway 169) and The Pub which opened up shop inside Hughes Elementary School last fall! There are also two parks: one near Main Street called Park Place Park while another just northwest corner First Ave SE called Highlandpark Park features baseball/softball fields,...and also offers playgrounds for children ages 6-12 years old! Additionally there are several professional sports teams who call home Town Stadium including American Hockey League’s North Stars lacrosse team...the Timberwolves basketball team...and ice hockey’s Wild horse players!

Many residents still maintain ties to their ancestral homelands: many people still speak Dakota Sioux as their first language; there are also numerous cultural activities (such as Lakota powwows) that take place throughout the year within the community limits
