Brainerd is a small town in southeastern Minnesota. It was founded in 1851 and has been around since the early 1800s. The township had a population of just over 7,000 people as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Brainerd River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Minneapolis. The community grew up around fur trading posts and farming settlements in what is now rural northeast Minnesota. In 1851, Brainerd's first post was established by Danish-Americans working for the Rasmuson brothers – entrepreneurs who were also pioneer farmers and merchants in what is now northwestern Iowa. The town rapidly developed during the 1850s into an agricultural center with mills, churches, and schools. By 1870, it boasted a hospital, grocery store, opera house, and several stores. During World War II, Brainerd served as both an evacuee camp and airfield for military personnel training at nearby Duluth-Moline Air Force Base. After the war ended in 1945, many residents moved away to become homeowners or began toerentrepreneurs within the larger community again. In recent decades, however, most residents have continued to live in their homes or businesses within the town limits.

Brainerd is a town in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of Minnesota's five towns and the only one located in Cass County. The name for Brainerd comes from "Brainerd Lake", which is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Brainerd were French fur traders in 1695–96 and 1718–19 who named it Pointe aux Meadows after their point of arrival on Lake Superior. The first permanent settlers arrived around 1800, when Jacob Ten Eyck and his brother Andreas founded a farmstead on a peninsula in present-day Brainerd Township. In 1853, James Womack established a post office at Pointe aux Meadows with mail service coming twice daily from Minneapolis via boat to points east of Rock Island Bay. In 1868, Isaac Noyes purchased land at what would become the eastern edge of town from John Youngs for $1 per acre (0·84 ha). By 1870, most of what became today's downtown had been platted out and development was underway: Four blocks west of where Noyes stood began the current business district that includes many local businesses including Moores Store and Cafe; two blocks south along Second Street served as home to First National Bank until its merger with Wells Fargo in 1998; further south along Third Street led to what is now Pizza Hut; and just north of Fourth Avenue served as an agricultural center before becoming known for its manufacturing sector beginning in the 1940s with heavy production by Stonington Manufacturing Company Incorporated (later renamed Hormel) during World War II (the company produced munitions). As early as 1869 there were reports that some people living near Lakes Michigan and Superior had plants growing maize or potatoes which they sold fresh or dried to markets beyond their locality. This enterprise did not survive long but may have been one genesis behind thinking about building a market within reach for farmers hereabouts." According to researcher Donnellan McDermott writing in "Minnesota Magazine" Volume XVIII No 2 (Feb/Mar 2006), "…a report signed by Jethro Root et al., Surveyors for MnWashington Land Office november 1860″ noted that "[o]nce there started being trade between these rivers [Lakes Michigan & Superior] and Ashtabula [New France], we find it necessary also to build navigation commodiously upon them on account both whereof we are very much increased". So while this original trade was conducted over water – something still possible today if you drive down US-101W towards Ashtabula – some sort of inland trading operation must have taken place because……………………………………….
