The Butler County Gun Club was chartered in 1868 and the first meeting was held on December 3rd. The club has been meeting continuously since then. On October 17, 1901, the Butler County Republican Party held their first convention at the current site of the Butler County Courthouse. There were only six members present but they elected George Tilton as Chairman and James J. Fenton as Vice-Chairman. In 1916, a new armory was built on Main Street in Brainerd and it served as the club's headquarters until 1953 when it burned down. The present day armory is located on East Third Street in Brainerd.

Brainerd is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 30,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County. The city is located in the far northeastern corner of Minnesota and is bordered by Manitoba to the north, Dakota to the east, and Iowa to the south. The first permanent resident of what would become Brainerd was John Swanton in 1838. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Hudson Bay. By 1851, Swanton had founded an agricultural settlement called "Natchez" about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of present-day Brainerd. In 1854, Daniel Webster came through Canada on his way to run for President and stopped at Natchez; he ordered his men there to build him a shelter from the elements. The town grew rapidly, reaching 100 residents by 1870. That year it became part of Dakota Territory when that territory was organized into states following the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1867. In 1898, Brainerd became one of five townships within newly created Ramsey County when it was established as a result of statehood laws passed during territorial days (). At its peak in 1920, Brainerd had a population of nearly 200 people living in sixteen blocks with seven businesses (). By 1940 only thirty families remained in what would become downtown Brainerd; today little more than half that number remains (14 families).
