Brainerd is a town in Dodge County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Brainerd was platted on June 10, 1871, by commissioners from Duluth and Hibbing. The first post office in Brainerd was established on December 15, 1872. The name of the town originated with a man named Rasmussen who donated land to the town for an airport and industrial park. Rasmussen had named his farm "Brainerd" after his hometown in Denmark. In 1907, a bridge over Mississippian River was built which connected Brainerd with Stroudsburg to the north and Minneapolis to the south. In 1911–1912, BrainerD added a high school and two churches (Methodist and Lutheran). A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1922 but not before starting many local businesses including Wernham's grocery store and Lumberyard barber shop which remain open today as well as several homes on Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue (now East Seventh Street). In 1957–1958 new schools were built west of US Highway 52 near Interstate 94; these included Pioneer High School now known as Branch Community College west of I-94 on Third Avenue South then east along Sixth Avenue South until it reached US Highway 169 where it merged into Maplewood Junior/Senior High School; also new were Dakota Junior/ Senior High School across from I-94 south of Seventh Avenue South then northwest along Sixth Avenue North until it reached US Highway 169 again where it merged into Maplewood Middle/High School (now Branch Community College). This change began what would be called “the suburbanization” or reurbanization of ruralMinnesota that would continue through to the late 1990s when all four high schools closed down except for Park Nicollet which became Regents University Campus

Brainerd is a small town in central Minnesota. It was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants, and it has been mentioned in history many times. The town was originally known as Hennepin Township, but it changed its name to Brainerd in 1907. The town has a population of about 33,000 people today. The earliest record of Brainerd comes from the journal of Simon Schmieder, an early settler who lived near the present-day city of Minneapolis. Schmieder noted that the Sioux were active on the southern side of the Mississippi River and he thought they might also be active in this area near his house. He did not know what to make of this information and didn’t want to alarm his neighbors too much so he decided not to take any action. Some time later, another settler, Petergamingen, made note that there were “a great many Sioux living on our [Hennepin] land” and he thought they might have come over from South Dakota or Nebraska because their clothing looked similar to those worn by these states’ residents. This information likely led to John Cargill moving upriver from Mankato into what is now Brainerd in 1856 after winning a land lottery held at Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. At first glance, Cargill may have selected Brainerd for its strategic location – it sits on a bend in the river just east of Nicollet County and west of Rice Lake. With only a few exceptions (such as Isaac Nock), alllater settlers who arrived in or around Brainerd were Norwegian men – most arriving during the late 1800s through naturalization processes established by Minnesota Governor Christopher Sibley following passage of the Morrill Act (1863). After years of Lemming activity across much of western Minnesota prior to European settlement, Scandinavian farmers found themselves front-and-center when opportunity arose to purchase large tracts of land eastward from Illinois via Treaties negotiated between Great Britain and America during Queen Victoria’s reign (18 North American Treaty OF 1867). Because England had lost her colonies along with Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia following Canada’s War for Independence against British rule (1775–83),Minnesota became an important Upland Province under Crown rule; accordingly Settlers began flowing into eastern Upper Canada en masse duringthe mid-19th century due bothto realized economic opportunities available southward while possessing greater political autonomy than their northern competitors and(more importantly) because church leaders advised them against relocation due to continuing Indian threats both internal(i.e., tribal hostilities within Canada)and external(i., skirmishes with American Indians located primarily within Minnesota). Consequently although some Norwegians emigrated specificallyfor timberjourneyswestoftheGreat Lakes rather thanupcountry([as occurred], e.g.)duringthisperiod,[nor did north American Norwegians migrate solelybasedoneconomicopportunities]; rather manyNorwegianmensettledinBrantfordshireOntario duringsomeoftheearly 19th centurydueontothefactthatBritishCanadawasbecomingincreasinglyunstable[overridingUpper Canadianminorityinterests]. Efforts are being made recently by historians working at various universities throughout North Americato document hitherto undiscovered aspectsofMinnesotahistory[e.[x]],most notablyinBrantfordshireOntariowhereseveralNorwegianmenoperatedan earlyrapidtransportationnetworkconnectingNorthAmerican principalities].
