Brainerd is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 931 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Ramsey County and one of the most compact cities in Minnesota. According to the 2000 census, Brainerd has a land area of only 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The first inhabitants of what is now Brainerd were farmers and their families who began arriving from Sweden beginning in 1834. They soon built a log cabin on an island in Porter Creek which they named "Hemmet". The first post office was established in 1835. The town took its name from Captain John Brainerd, who commanded a U.S. vessel called " Pioneer" during the American Revolution and then served as lieutenant governor of Minnesota under Governor Isaac Brockway. In 1881, when Minneapolis and St Paul were founded, captain John's brother-in-law George Kemper laid out a subdivision for white residents near what is now downtown Minneapolis on what are now Agricultural Boulevard and Lyndale Avenue South. This early development helped spur growth for what would become known as "The Village", as many small businesses grew up around it including carpenter shops, groceries, bakeries and breweries; today's block features several high-end restaurants such as Benares Grill & Brewery and 4 Barrels Brewing Company among others . In 1907–08Captain John's widow donated land along Oneida Street SE to form University Park which included large blocks of flats (now demolished) used by various educational institutions until they moved out after World War II . After her death in 1910 his son Harold took over control of their family farmstead until he died young in 1944 A daughter by this marriage married Captain John's grandson Harold Moulton , son of Major General Jens Moulton (1848-1914), headmaster of Rugby School - one time rector at Hennepin Technical High School before becoming dean at Winona State University An interesting footnote to this story is that while there have been numerous mayors throughout history with different namesakes serving multiple terms - without any formal mayoral process or naming convention - all seven current mayors with given names - Erik Eriksson (Brainerd), Betsy Hodges (St Cloud), Donny Deutsch (Mankato), Arne Carlson (White Bear Lakes), Lori Swanson (Crosslake) and Jacob Freytag (Hopkinsville) - hold positions effectively through term limits set by law enacted into law by each mayor since coming into office - all seven men listed above were elected via popular vote rather than appointment or election ahead of schedule

Brainerd, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of the Great Lakes Region. The population was 5,471 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from Norse Brainerd meaning "bridge over the water" and "bridge over the creek". The first settlement in what is now Brainerd was made on Valentine's Day in 1836 by eighty-five pioneers who set out from Rochester, New York. They were led by Captain John Richardson and his brother-in-law George Armstrong. The town started off as a stage stop on the way to Duluth. It quickly became an important center for lumbering and agriculture. In 1907, Drury Brothers Company built a large mill here that remain one of the town's most famous landmarks today. Today, much of Brainerd's commercial activity takes place in downtown Minneapolis or around its riverfront promenade where restaurants and businesses line both sides of Wabasha Street. In 1916, when World War I began, many men from throughout Minnesota enlisted in service and Brainerd became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America. More than ninety percent of all buildings were destroyed or damaged during that time period. Although many people lost their homes, businesses and friends, no one died as a result of bombing – something that has made this city stand tall since then! After World War II ended there was growth in manufacturing hereabouts with companies like Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company(now Allied Signal) moving into town after being founded in MilwaukeeWisconsin Yugoslavia had been defeated during World War II so not many people wanted to move there because they thought it would be more difficult adjusting to postwar life etc etc etc but it wasn't really until company moved away did locals start feeling displaced etc etc The post war boom brought prosperity to town which helped revive local economy
