Today many aspects of life are based on services or trade instead: healthcare (including Medicare and Medicaid), retail sales (in addition to three grocery stores), transportation (mainly Amtrak trains into downtown St Paul), manufacturing (especially here in light manufacturing sectors such as plastics processing), professional services (lawyers, dentists) and information technology (a few businesses have thrived online). Brainerd is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Dakota Sioux word braa-kreen meaning "bridge over the prairies." The first settlers to Brainerd were John Jacob Astor and his family who arrived in 1854. They donated land for a courthouse and school. In 1871, James Doolittle founded what would become the largest flour mill on the Great Lakes region. He also founded the Brainerd Academy which still operates today as a private academy. In 1916, Akeley Glass Company was founded in Brainerd by Alfred Akeley and his brother Harry Akeley. Alfred Akley played an important role in early American glassmaking and he helped create many of Minnesota's leading glass companies including Stonington Glass Works (now known as Pioneer Glass), Alpena Glass Works (now part of JCPenney) and First National Bank of Minneapolis (later merged into Sears & Roebuck). The company became one of America's leading manufacturers of window tinting products until it went bankrupt in 1980. In 1945, Brainerd was chartered as a city by Minneapolis Mayor John Seward with plans to attract heavy industry to help spur economic development within the city limits. However, only two years later when war production beganoggle gasoline prices skyrocketing so high that cities throughout America were struggling financially due to shortages caused by World War II lend-lease policies, much like those being implemented during peacetime in America than ever before.,the city government rescinded its charter status and reverted back to rural village form.. After more than fifty years of decline following industrial shut downs or mergers with other neighboring towns, there has been recent resurgence growth initiated by new businesses such as REI which opened up an eighty acre seasonal operations park adjacent to downtown just east of Interstate 94 called “The Park” which includes five thousand square feet of retail space along with several hundred acres forrestland/farming/hunting opportunities; new housing developments have sprung up around I-94 including: CenturyLink Field across from town hall; Jesse James Arena off Hwy 169 south of town hall; Amazon warehouse complex south side arterial highway near I-94 exit 169; large truck stop located on interstate road about two miles east side from downtown on state highway 146.; numerous small businesses have opened up since then including: local medical clinic; bank;; restaurant;; grocery store;; bar;; convenience store;; ice cream parlor;; bowling alley
