Brainerd is a town in La Crosse County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Brainerd were the Menominee and Dakota Indians. They built wigwams on lands that are now part of the city of La Crosse. The first post office was established in 1827, and the town was named after Captain James Brainerd who commanded an American squadron that fought against Spain during the Mexican-American War. In 1854, General George Armstrong Custer's unit made its way to Brainerd on their way to Battle Creek where they were to attack Mexico City from behind enemy lines. In 1865, John Akeley founded Akeley Brewery which still operates today as one of America's most successful small breweries with production totaling over 2 million barrels annually. After World War II, many residents left for various reasons including joblessness and a lack of opportunity in postwar America while others moved into newly developed suburbs such as White Bear Lake or Oakdale until finally annexation by La Crosse led to heavy development in what had once been a farming community only 10 miles from downtown La Crosse (now Minneapolis). Today much of what used to be rural farmland has been turned into urban areas due to suburban growth; however some original farms remain within the bounds of Brainerd township including McIntosh Farms and Isabellaowne Farmsteads which offer opportunities for traditional farm activities such as raising livestock and growing crops such as corn and beans along with access to trails leading away from town center. The townsite was laid out by surveyors William McKinney and Cornelius Deering on May 12th, 1858 following a public land lottery conducted by territorial governor Isaac Stevens in order to provide incentive for settlers moving into newly acquired territory east of Saint Anthony Falls (Minnesota). The townsite consisted of twenty-eight blocks containing 640 acres (248 ha) divided among six lots measuring 0:50 mile square each - making it one of largest townships organized through donationary process in Minnesota history at that time! With no railroads or other transportation options available except walking or boat trips around his new village site Mr. Akeley did everything himself; he hauled water from wells located near his brewery directly unto his beer taps!
Brainerd was founded in 1854 by Nels Nelson and Gustavus Adolphus Bender. The city was named after the Brainerd farm where it began. In 1870, the first courthouse was built in the city. In 1892, a fire destroyed most of downtown Brainerd, but the city quickly rebuilt. In 1925, Brainerd became a charter town and adopted a Mayor-Council form of government. The city's nickname is "The City that Knew How to Stay afloat" because of its ability to bounce back from major disasters.
