As production outside military housing dwindled following Pearl Harbor, Brainerd began expanding into other businesses such as retailing and professional services while maintaining its firefighter/Mattress Firm tradition until 2005 when that company closed its doors due to budget constraints within Hennepin County government leadership In recent years many small businesses have opened up around downtown including several restaurants/cafes/bars along 2nd Street NE between University Avenue and State Street NW as well as two small retailers located near Veterans Memorial Stadium on Nicollet Mall
