When people think of shooting, most think about handguns. However, there have been many shootings in Bloomington over the years that were not related to handguns. There have been shootings with rifles as well, but this is a topic for another paper. In 1892, Bloomington had its first rifle shooting competition between high school students and their teachers. The first shotgun shooting competition was held in 1924. Rifle shooters from around the country competed in these competitions until 1957 when shotguns became the dominate sport on Long Island. Shotguns continue to be popular today because they are easy to use and can shoot multiple rounds quickly without reloading. Firearms used in shooting competitions vary greatly; someshooters use revolvers while others may use shotguns or pistols. While handgun victims are more likely to be killed than rifle victims, shotgun victims are also more likely to be killed because they cannot defend themselves effectively with a firearm that is not meant for hand-to-hand combat. There has been an increase in shootings among high school students over the last few decades due to several factors such as stricter gun laws and inexperienced owners who do not know how to properly store firearms or shoot them safely. In 1978, Bloomington experienced one of the deadliest school shootings ever when two gunmen shot and killed six children and two educators at Hennepin County Public Schools before committing suicide (Fletcher). Gunlaws have changed over time since then however, making it harder for people who are not familiar with firearms to obtain them or shoot them safely (Dostal). One way that this might change is if Congress decides to pass legislation which would require manufacturers of assault rifles make sure their guns can fire all rounds without needing a second round (Newtown). This could lead to fewer massacres like that happened in December 2012 when 27 people were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School after gunman Adam Lanza bought his weapons legally (Douglas).

Bloomington, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and the county seat of Hennepin County. The population was 565,191 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Minnesota and its largest county seat. By 1880, Bloomington had over 10%of Minnesotans living within its limits; today it has less than 1%. In 1905–06 during World War I many soldiers from towns in central MN were drafted into service at Camp Tolson near Minneapolis – including Bloomington where many enlisted under cover of darkness while their families slept elsewhere across town due to fear of German bombardment or worse should they be found out later back home. After the war ended there were new waves of immigrants from Europe who started arriving here beginning in earnest around 1920s with larger families coming from Poland and Hungary via America’s then-new Great Lakes region before settling permanently here aftertrying their luck in other parts of North America/Europe respectively followed soon thereafter by others brought over for work or education opportunities during these heady days following ratification(1921)of national immigration law which primarily regulated entry into this country based on ability to support oneself financially rather than race or ethnicity
