The company that operated this business, J.B. White & Sons, became a part of Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1865 and continued to serve Bloomington until 1971 when they moved to nearby Stillwater. In 1969, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company and Red Dot Sight was reorganized into Remington-Winchester Firearms Corporation which still operates today as a subsidiary of Brownells Incorporated. The origins of red dot sights can be traced back to at least 1861 when J.B. White & Sons opened their store in Bloomington selling firearms including pistols, rifles, shotguns and someoculars/telescopes (see History of Red Dot Sights). This early business venture is significant because it was the first time that a company offered these products through an open door policy instead of limiting sales to customers who were already acquainted with the product(s) being sold from their current location(s). In 1865, Winchester Repeating Arms Company purchased the assets of J.B. White & Sons for $8,000 dollars (approximately $201,000 today).
