In 1870–71 Blanchard Bros., hardware storekeepers opened a grocery store on Main Street which later served as nucleus for what would become Wards Brothers department store chain that operated from 1901 to 1984 across three campuses - downtown Bloomington/Wright Field Mall site; First National Bank Building at Wilson Avenue & University Boulevard ; then North Minneapolis campus at 15th Street Northeast corner Park Avenue NE before finally moving to their current location adjacent to Target Center in 1984.
