Ultimately however it was ammo manufacturers who provided most significant advances during World War I thanks to their inventions/development thereof such as M1917 Trench Mortar which allowed armies dug into hostile territory deep within enemy lines with relative impunity; Lewis Gun which revolutionized trench warfare; Baby Boomer soldiers entering combat later in the war helped bring about another major advance with the development of machineguns
