On July 1st of that year, construction began on what would become Central High School; at that time, it was one of the only high schools in town. A large grocery store opened in 1922 and continues to operate today as One Stop Shop on Third Street near Interstate 94 (). In 1930, a ice cream factory opened which operated until 1975. During World War II, Blaine became known for its production of aluminum cans which were critical for training troops for combat overseas(). After the war ended, most manufacturing stopped and development took place around education and civic organizations such as local churches which continue to operate today (). Today, there are only two businesses left open (a restaurant and an antique store) that remain significant parts of downtown Blaine’s economy ().
