Gun targets have been a feature of Bemidji, Minnesota since the early 1800s. The first guns in the area were an old fashioned shotgun and muzzleloader. In 1871, General James Shields erected a small fortification at what is now known as Shields Park to protect against Indians. The fort was used intermittently until 1895 when it was abandoned and replaced by a modern arsenal. In 1905, Johnnie Ray built the first gunnery school in Bemidji. It soon became apparent that there was need for more guns to protect the community from crime. A new armory was built in 1911 and named after Commodore Perry, one of the earliest American naval commanders in Asia. This armory became operational on July 1st 1912 and housed both cannons and rifles for use by the local police force as well as artillery for use against Indian militants. The Second World War began on September 2nd 1939 and lasted until May 6th 1945. Gunfire from across America killed many civilians including many children who were playing near bomb shelters when they were bombed by Nazi Germany during the war years. On November 11th 1944, while fighting raged outside of Bismarck, North Dakota, United States Marines massacred 3 Japanese soldiers using their shotguns while under fire fromAmerican forces positioned nearby! This atrocity will forever be remembered as one of history’s most heinous crimes! Bemidji, Minnesota is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,984 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County and the home to Bemidji State University. The area that now makes up Bemidji was first settled by Finnish immigrants in 1836. The town was founded in 1881 as a post office and store town named after Major George Beecham of British Army fame who had died two years earlier while on a cattle drive through the area. The name "Bemidji" comes from Swedish for "a small meadow by the river". In 1898, Bemidji became part of US-Canada when Manitoba became part of Canada. In 1916, World War I veteran General John J Pershing ordered all American troops out of Canada and into Europe where they were to fight on various fronts. Many soldiers stayed behind in Canada and began to build what would become known as "The Great Lakes Division" which included Bemidji. By 1921, there were over 7500 people living in Bemidji with an average household size of 3.1 persons per household (the highest concentration ever recorded). There were also many businesses such as grocery stores and lumberyards that thrived during this time period thanks to the country's lackof refrigeration. It wasn't until after World War II did things start changing for the better for everyone living in Bemidji when air conditioning began becoming widely available throughout North America and beyond; however, it wasn't until 1951 that Main Street finally got its own streetlights which helped make life more comfortable for everyone within the community including those who worked outside of town limits (which continued until 1978). One big reason why things have started getting better for everyone within BEMIDJI is because over the past few decades we've seenaji grow into one of the most economically vibrant towns inMinnesota - boasting both job opportunities and an influx of new residents who are looking to make their mark on society here! Bemidji, Minnesota is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 958 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Louis County. The Bemidji-Moorhead Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 2,035, making it the largest micropolitan area in Minnesota. The Bemidji-Moorhead Combined Statistical Area has a population of 3,839 and is the second-largest combined statistical area in Minnesota after the Twin Cities–Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settled in what is now Bemidji were French colonists from Quebec who arrived in 1809 as part of an expedition led by Pierre François L’Ouverture and Chateaubriand. They named their new land "Bamble" for convenience and because they found beech trees thereabouts with high quality wood to build boats with (now known as "bambles"). In 1824 local resident John Hennepin built one of the first mills on the Mississippi River and became one of its early directors; he also donated land to support town growth. By 1830, all but two blocks of downtown had been developed and Horace Greeley founded what would become Mankato College nearby on land donated by Hennepin in 1831. In 1861during American Civil War General George Armstrong Custer's army passed through town while encamped near Fort Snelling; his troops stopped at Bemidji on their way north before continuing on towards Minneapolis; this event helped lead to rapid growth within Bemidji over time as travelers reported back about unusual sights and sounds they had encountered during their stay hereabouts! In 1907 when Minneapolis incorporated as a city it annexed most of rural StLouis County including much present day Bemidji; today's City Limits were drawn up around that time including significant portions of downtown which are still undeveloped today due largely to zoning restrictions placed upon new development then being introduced following World War II! On July 1st 1889 mapmaker Auguste Rodier drew up plans for a townsite eastward from old Fort Snelling settlement site covering lands now included within present day Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan areas - these plans were never fully followed up or completed due primarily to lack interest shown by early settlers living too far away from proposed townsite location! Some remnants extant today date back to that original survey effort including small creek running side streets northeast from current Fourth Street intersection just west of old fort site!! thus giving rise to some confusion among later residents regarding exactly where contemporary downtown BEMIDJI actually sits geographically speaking TODAY...? however overall most residents seem generally content & happy living relatively close(ish)to major metropolitan centers like MINNEAPOLIS & ST PAUL nowadays!!!
The first European to visit the area now known as Bemidji was a French expedition in 1636. The explorers named it Saint-Malo after the archbishop of Reims, but no such thing ever happened. In 1781, the United States bought land in what is now Bemidji from the Sioux. The town began as a small farming center and gradually grew into a regional center for industry and commerce. Manufacturing plants were built here including a flour mill, cheese factory, and shipbuilding yards. The area also became known for its agriculture and fruit production until the early twentieth century when automobiles made Bemidji a popular tourist destination.
