Bemidji, Minnesota is a small town in Bemidji County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 756 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name means "in the bend." The first Europeans to visit what is now Bemidji were fur traders from northern Russia in 1819. They named the place Beaulieu after one of their number, Baron Pierre Beaulieu, who had been on an exploration expedition in 1815 that crossed the Great Lakes and visited what is now Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1824 Darnell built a sawmill here and became one of the first farmers in this area. A post office was established at Bemidji in 1830, and by 1840 there were over 50 residents hereabouts. The town got its start as a stop on stagecoach routes between Minneapolis and St Louis during the early 19th century. The first store opened in 1847 and soon became a center for trade with other parts of Minnesota and beyond. By 1860 there were about 100 people living hereabouts; however, it would not be until 1870 that real growth began as businesses prospered around mills and other enterprises that dotted the landscape like sugar beet fields (then known as beet land) east of town centre on state Highway 431/Highway 169 (now US 61). One resident who played an important role in early days of Bemidji was George Hennepin County treasurer John Sibley who served from 1861 to 1865 when he was succeeded by his brother Andrew Sibley before becoming county judge (1867-71). Andrew’s son John Sibley Jr., also county judge from 1971-1981 before being elected governor of MN & US Senate (1984-88), later bought property east of town centre where he founded Park Place Mall which anchors downtown Bemidji today The initial vision for Park Place Mall included 1 million square feet combined retail space plus hotel rooms/condos etc., but due to successive economic conditions within MN & USA over time mall development stalled & never fully materialized .
