The company continued operation until 1954 when it merged with Armour & Co., a large munitions manufacturer based in Chicago. Bemidji, Minnesota is a town in west-central Minnesota. The population was 5,837 at the 2010 census. Bemidji is the county seat of Hennepin County. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Bemidji were the Potawatomi Indians. They built earth lodges on hills near present day Bemidji and later traded with Europeans. In 1851, Major General James Washingburn ordered Captain John Sibley to found a military post at Mound Junction, east of present day Bemidji, in order to protect traders traveling between St. Louis and points northward along the Great Lakes region. Captain Sibley named his post Fort Snelling after General Snelling who had commanded British troops during the American Revolution (1775-1783). The city of Mound Junction was founded by settlers from Sweden in 1857, when they leased land from the Potawatomi Indian tribe for $1 an acre. A cotton gin and mill were started here in 1865 by Drury & Co., one of several early mills located around this time along Interstate 94 including Duluth and Rochester Hills; these began production until 1977 when it was replaced by a more modern facility known as Riverdale Mills Incorporated (RDMI), also located near downtown Bemidji today In 1916, Johan August Haglund opened what would become known as Mr.'s grocery store on Seventh Street which would become one of Midwest's most popular stores with customers coming from all over North America for their favorite groceries items like fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products, breads etc.. For many years it continued to be one of Midwest's most popular stores despite changes within its own company due to competition from larger Grocery Outlet Companies such as Safeway and Kroger who became national players over time In 1960s local residents formed a group called "The Community United for Progress" or CUP which worked towards creating economic development opportunities for their town through educational programming such as job training programs and cultural events that aimed to improve communication skills among ethnic groups living in surrounding communities CUP successfully campaigned for passage of legislation establishing Hennepin County Regional Park District which included lands adjacent to Mound Junction where they had originally leased from the Potawatomie Tribe This park district remains todayone of largest regional parks in Minnesota with over 162 acres (65 hectares) consisting mostly of natural forested campus squares bordered by lakes that provide excellent fishing opportunities while providing centuries old Native American artifacts and sites open to visitation
