In 1871, it was platted as a town on an edge of what is now Austin, Minnesota by farmers who were looking to move their crops to new land east of the Mississippi River. The name "Austin" probably came from a Sioux word meaning "place where there are many buffalo." In 1912, Target Corporation established its first store in Austin, becoming one of the leading retailers in this early era of target shooting. The company continued to operate a store here until 1984 when it closed its doors for good after more than 150 years in business! Austin, Minnesota is a city in Saint Cloud County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. Austin is the county seat of Saint Cloud County. The area that now makes up Austin was first settled by Europeans in 1851 and named "Winnipeg", after the then-nascent town in Manitoba, Canada. In 1868, the towns of East Stroudsburg and West Stroudsburg were founded nearby, and Austin was born. In 1870 it became an incorporated village; it reverted to its original name in 1907. In 1872 John Wesley Powell passed through Scottsbluff on his way to visit the great lakes region and came across what he supposed to be an abandoned Indian trading post near present-day Austin. He called it "Crow's Nest" because of the numerous crow nests around the site (the word 'crow' is Scots for 'old woman'). The first permanent settler in what would become Austin was Lorenzo Reed who arrived in 1875 from Illinois with his family. He platted a town lot on which he built a frame house and named it "Reedville". When he died young in 1902 his wife left him money sufficient to purchase land elsewhere so that he could continue developing his settlement without interference from her husband's will; this land would become known as Reed Township. The final blow to early development came when insurance companies refused to insure any buildings or people located within 300 feet (100 m) of a river because they feared such activity might lead to floods or other calamities - this effectively killed off most businesses within short distance of riverside communities during prohibition period!
