The last commercial building standing today was the old schoolhouse on Third Street which burned down on November 7th 1919 while students were taking finals exams for their high school diploma class! It wasn't until 1957 when Interstate 35 passed through downtown Austin that things started changing for the better with new businesses opening up including Burger King(1959), KFC(1960), tire store(1963), Pizza Hut(1978)), Overflow Cafe(1981)(closed 1985) and Roy Rogers Western Emporium(1982). currently it houses several strip malls such as Six Flags Discovery Kingdom[3], US Airways Center,[4]Target[5], Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade[6], promenade mall.[7] Today downtownAustin features many large box stores such as Sears[8], JCPenney,[9],[10] Macy’s/Belk/H&M/, Costco,[11],[12],[13],[14],[15]'s Sears Tower'', 'US Cellular Arena','Frigate Lounge','Lilburn Highlands High School[/16]. Downtown also has many art galleries like MN Art Gallery & Museum,[20]'National Gallery Of Art - United Statesof America‎,'National Portrait Gallery‎,'Gallery At Central Park‎.' There are also numerous small shops and boutiques dotting streets throughout downtown like Lord & Taylor Place,[21]-Boutique Row-[22]-Quarterdeck Plaza Shopping District-[23]-Esquire Square Shopping District-[24]-Goodyear Mall.[25],[26]'
