The site of today’s Austin Municipal Airport was the location of a small settlement called Prairie du Chien. On December 12th, 1871, James H. Winchester created the first revolver in America. This revolver was named the Colt Pistol and it featured a 6-inch barrel and a percussion cap firing device known as a hammerlock action. It was manufactured by James H. Winchester and sold for $2 per pistol. The first handgun to be made in Austin, Minnesota was actually designed by an Englishman named John Browning who lived in Minneapolis at the time that he designed this particular firearm. In 1907, John Browning presented his design for what would become known as the Colt 1911 Pistol which featured a 5-inch barrel and an ejector rod system that allowed reloading without having to remove the entireMagazine each time which became popularized over time and eventually replaced with magazine pouches on most handguns today. In 1934, following World War II, Congress passed legislation authorizing firearms manufacturers to produce pistols chambered for .45 ACP caliber rounds instead of 9mm Parabellum rounds which led to what is now known as “the ‘big three’ American firearms manufacturers” – Remington Arms Company (RAC), Colt Firearms Corporation (CFC) and Ruger Co., Inc.(RUG). These companies were entrusted with manufacturing all handgun calibers other than .22 LR which remained under exclusive control of Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc.(STR). Today only two companies still produce handguns chambered for .45 ACP caliber rounds – Glock AG (Glock) and Smith & Wesson Corporation(SWAG). However, regardless of size, all pistols need a bore diameter that is able to fit properly into the chamber of their cartridge magazine. A bore diameter measurement should also include any rifling present on the barrel in order to improve accuracy when shooting at close range. In addition, guns that were designed for target practice often require a lengthened barrel in order to achieve higher velocities than those used by assault weapons (which use short barrels).

The town center was founded in 1861 when a railroad depot was built there. In 1865, the first post office opened in Austin and remained open until 1901. In 1870, Austin became a city and continued to grow until it had a population of over 100 people by 1909. By 1920,Austin had become the largest city in Minnesota with a population of over 1,000 people.
