Austin, Minnesota is a small town in central Minnesota that has been around since the late 1800s. The area that now makes up Austin was first settled by German-Americans and originally called Zwickau. In 1873, the community was renamed Minneapolis after Minneapolis, Minnesota had become a city. Austin was once home to many mining and lumber businesses, but they all closed down in the mid-1980s. Today, Austin is mostly a farming town with a few stores and restaurants. The history of Austin began with three men who came to the area in 1873: John Wessels, Emanuel Selvin, and George Lange. Wessels arrived from Germany while Selvin came from Russia. They each started out working on farms near Zwickau before moving to what is now Austin in 1875. There they opened a grocery store and started trading goods with other towns in central Minnesota. In 1880, they bought land east of downtown for $10 per acre and built their own farm house which still stands today. Over time, their business grew until it became one of the most successful groceries in town. In 1912, Austin voted to secede fromMinnesota and formed its own state government known as Dakota Territory under the leadership of president Grover Cleveland Jr.. This decision caused much conflict withinAustin because many residents felt that their city should have remained part of the stately Minneapolis metropolitan area rather than separating itself unilaterally like this! In 1916-17 (during World War I), Austin also supported America’s side against Great Britain during The Great European War; however due to its close proximity to both countries it was not able to contribute too materially either way (though it did send volunteers). After World War I ended, Austin again regained its independence as an entity withinMinnesota; however this time things didn’t stay smooth sailing for long though! tensions between city residents and rural farmers quickly boiled over into violence throughout 1919-1920 known as The Prairie Famine/Crisis (aka “The Farm Incident”). At least 254 people were killed as a result of various disputes related to food prices and distribution issues on Chicago’s South Side during those years; these killings are still amongstthe most infamous events in Texas County history! During this time period also saw several changes withinAustin including the incorporation of two black churches into the community – First African Methodist Episcopal Church (later United Pentecostal church) & Second Baptist Church – both located right next door to one another on Third Street! These institutions helped keep Austin racially diverse through most of its history despite some occasional controversies stirred up by white supremacists or Ku Klux Klan members at times! During World War II morale soared amongst American forces stationed here due To strategic location midway between Europe & Japan On December 7th 1942 Omaha Beach was attacked by Japanese forces resulting in almost 4000 Americans lost - majority being executed onboard USS Missouri . Many locals took advantage of local hospitality hosting troops & civilians awaiting news back home while others simply refused help or sought revenge . Priorities shifted when hostilities turned sour & General MacArthur ordered all military personnel must leave without proper notice – including 400+ citizens living here!. Most refugees chose not return but about 50% did so eventually setting up camp outsideofAustin prior to being moved back inside ensuite facilities later that year+. Emanuel Selvin died suddenly at age 66 just days after becoming mayoralty candidate for Travis County seat November 3rd 1928 following 5 term stint as District Attorney general office held concurrently concurrent with his gubernatorial bid (& he would have won had henot passed away soon afterwards) bringing an end 2 long era continuous rule by 2 brothers tandem reign behind Busch family political dynasty whose rule spanned 70 yr beginning 1946 thru present day
In 1881, the first white person to live in Austin, Minnesota was John W. Ingram. In 1908, a post office was established in Austin and mail service began. A lumber company built a sawmill in Austin in 1912 and it continued to be operational until 1977. The mill is now a museum. The first high school for students in Austin was founded in 1915. The school has since been closed and replaced by another high school which opened in 2006.
