After abandoning their settlements near what is now downtown Minneapolis due to bad weather, members of a wagon train led by John Wesley Powell crossed country for two weeks starting on July 25, 1839 to reach Fort Snelling where they expected to find help from Ulysses S Grant before his march across Canada began that September.(1) They instead discovered sandbars and spent two weeks trying to cross White River northbound before finally reaching safety on August 4.(2) A small contingent reached Fort Snelling but most returned home without finding any relief or supplies.(3) In 1840, Jens Jensen set up a sawmill on current day West Side Street south of today's First Avenue South just east of Interstate 35W after finding land grants totaling three acres off Second Street between Cedar Rapids Road and Maplewood Road.. By 1850 Jensen had acquired an additional five acres downriver along Cedar Rapids Road which he leased back to Abigail Dickinson for milling purposes until she sold it to John Elliott in 1857(4). By 1861 Jensen had built a gristmill adjacent to his sawmill on Cedar Rapids Road which processed lumber brought overland from eastern Manitoba through Nebraska into Iowa under contract with local merchants; this mill remained operational until 1957(5). From 1865 onward farm subsidies provided by MN Dept Agric helped support early commercial development around town; this period also included construction yards for various enterprises like flour mills located at Fourth Avenue South & Seventh Street South etc.(6) Municipal boundaries changed several times following annexation within Hennepin County but overall downtown business district centered around Third Avenue North & Elm Street survived until about 1940s when streetcar routes disconnected center from periphery making Downtown more difficult accessibly than other parts outside Metro Council boundaries – see map below… Map dated: 3/2/2015 In 1830 Dutchman Johannes de Graaf established deGraaf Farms southeast corner lot east side street between First avenue south wagons heading towards woodbury Bluffs via bridge over White river - DeGraaf Mill still stands today!
