Apple Valley is a small town in the Minnesota county of Morrison. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is located east of downtown Minneapolis on the border of Apple Valley and Bloomington. The village was founded in 1867 by Norwegian immigrants as an agricultural community on a tract of land that had been granted to them by Governor Alexander Ramsey. By 1880, Apple Valley had a post office, four churches (Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist), three schools (one low school and two high schools), a grain elevator, three sawmills, six farms, and a couple of stores. In 1903–04, American Electric Power Company built one of its largest power plants in Minnesota at what is now known as Central Avenue and Elm Street in Apple Valley. It was the first such plant in America and continued to be used until it was closed down in 1984. The company also erected a large factory complex northwest of town near Eden Prairie which included two smelters for refining coal into electricity; two furnaces for manufacturing sheet metal; five boilers for generating steam; four machine shops; sixteen barracks; four hospitals; twenty-four dwellings; thirty-six water towers ( seventeen public water systems were served); fifty thousand gallons per day were produced from these facilities—twenty times more than required by law—and resulted in creation of one hundred jobs. In addition to providing power to local businesses and homes through their electric lines running from Central Avenue all the way down to Eden Prairie Boulevard outside town proper) American Electric Power Company also constructed an underground cablecar system called "The Lift" which ran between Apple Valley Plaza off Cedar Street just east of Main Street near Eden Prairie Village Park before terminating at Morningside Drive northeast of town proper).
