The name "Apple Valley" comes from two sources: one is the Apple family's apple orchard that was located near present-day Apple Valley, and the other is after John Aspinwall's farm on Hennepin County Road A1 (present-day Highway 9) which served as a stopover for travelers between Appleton and Duluth on their way to work in Superior or Hibbing. The first settler in what is now Apple Valley was Norwegian Lutheran pastor Erik Olson who arrived in 1837. In 1881, postmaster Jens Olsen took over running the mail service from his father, Peder Olsen. In 1893, he married Johanna Meshuller (1851–1929). They had six children: Ole Gunnar Olsen (1894–1971), Lauritzen Thorarin Olsen (1896–1982), Hjalmar Petersen Olsen (1900–1976), Maren Grete Jensen (1902–1988), and Torunn Børge Lunde (1904–1994). Maren Grete Jensen married farmer Ole Gundersen in 1944 and they raised four children there: Audun Gundersen (1945−2001), Per Arne Gundersen (), Mette Kirstine Gundersen (), and Knut Arne Gundersen (). Knut Arne Gundersen became an entrepreneur with his own grocery store called "Gundersons Grocery" at 436 First Avenue N., later known as Target Corporation until it closed in 2016. Mette Kirstine Gundersen married carpenter/builder Roy Carlson in 1976; they raised three children: Amy Carlson () and her husband Rick Carlson () and their daughter Brooke Carlson ();Amy & Rick Carlson are current owners of Stillwater Golf Course which has been around since 1907
Apple Valley is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the South Fork of the Minnesota River. The population was 2,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Apple Valley was laid out in 1857 by General James Hennepin as a farmstead on an abandoned Indian trail that he and his family had discovered while exploring the region for land grants. The name "Apple Valley" likely comes from an apple orchard that once stood in what is now Apple Valley. The first post office in Apple Valley was established in 1868, and it remained operational until 1959. The first store opened in 1888, and this business became known as the Grand Rapids Exchange Shop before being renamed to its current name in 1913. At one time, Apple Valley was home to two newspapers -the Apple County Herald (1888-1912) and then the Apple Valley Tribune (1913-present). In 1912, General James Hennepin donated lands adjacent to present-day Apple Valley so that a community could be developed there specifically for Native American veterans who had fought for America during World War I. This community later became known as Veterans Village after its incorporation into village form in 1921 by Minnesotans who felt beneficial to have such a facility nearby their city limits; it remains an active military entertainment district today In 1902, First National Bank & Trust Company opened up shop here with $3 million worth of assets under management - which made it one of only 10 banks nationwide at that time with more than $100 million total assets under management The bank went bankrupt within six years due to overexposure to interest rates and bad loans Pioneer Airlines began operations at Lindbergh Field Airport just north of town proper on Valentine's Day 1945 – making it possible for residents without cars or access to public transportation to get around town During World War II, many soldiers were stationed here including many airmen who lived aboard Air Force Base Mpls.–Ft Snelling which served as their barracks while they were deployed After V-E Day 1945, many residents decided not want any reminders or associated infrastructure left from wartime days like Lindbergh Field Airport which still stands today although somewhat dilapidated – hence why most people refer to it simply as “Ft Snelling” these daysWWII era photos show servicemen relaxing outside their barracks
