Apple Valley, Minnesota is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. The name "Apple Valley" was given to the valley by early farmers who found apples there. In 1887, Apple Valley was incorporated as a village. It experienced heavy economic decline during the Great Depression and World War II; however, since then it has made progress through various redevelopment projects. The town's economy now revolves around technology and education; chiefly, Apple Valley Colleges which provides training for many local jobs in technology and other related fields The first settler in what is today Apple Valley was James Watt (1822-90). He came to this area from Canada in 1847 with his family. Watt operated a sawmill near present day Apple Valley where he died. His son John built the present day schoolhouse on land that he donated to the village of Apple Valley in 1881. Later that year, Alexander McKay bought the mill from John Watt and began operating it as an agricultural implement dealership and store. McKay married Anna Catherwood of nearby Springdale and continued running the business until his death in 1942. Their daughter Nellie ran the store until her death in 1978. During World War II, much of what is now Apple Valley were within enemy fire range due to its strategic location along I-35W between Minneapolis and St Paul as well as its close proximity to mines across the country which generated great amounts of noise making during wartime activities both inside and outside of town limits (). Although damage done within town limits did occur (), most importantly throughout apple valley were V-2 rockets being developed by German scientists () which impacted centralMinnesota on April 14th 1945 causing great damage including extensively damaging 3 homes just east of town center (), one farmstead west of center (), 2 churches (St Joseph’s Episcopal Church & First Lutheran Church)& 3 businesses (& 1 military installation) all within 10 miles (16 km)of downtown Minneapolis(). These events led quickly to efforts by representatives from both cities/counties together with state legislators to try & direct traffic away from harm’s way while still allowing commercial activity taking place (); ultimately this failed due partly because gas prices increased markedly after V-2 launch (). After several years ofintensive effort by both city/county leaders AND some private donations over $5 millionUSD plus government funding following Air Force aerial reconnaissance footage obtained from Japan () finally Governor Jesse Ventura declared an emergency areas available for township residents on July 4th 1990 following extensive damage caused by 9v20 munitions being dropped on our community late night on May 15th 1990 followed shortly thereafter by National Guard troops presence & clean up operations having ended only days later .....
