Apple Valley is a small town in the north-central portion of Minnesota. It lies on the border of Apple County and Hennepin County, and is bordered by the city of Minneapolis to the east, rural farmland to the west, and Lake Minnetonka to the south. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. The first recorded mention of apple trees in Apple Valley was in 1871 when A.J. Bender purchased some land from Rasmus Nordahl for $2 per acre (about $ ). Jorden Olson bought 3 acres (1 hectare) adjacent to his parents' farm in 1892 for $15 per acre (about $ ). In 1903, Fred Carlson bought 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometer) northeast of present-day Apple Valley for $5 per acre (about $ ). settlers began moving into this area beginning around 1900 when Jesse Unterberger obtained title to 640 acres adjoining Hennepin County along with an estimated 15 acres (~6 hectares) of forestland (). Unterberger had been granted permission by county commissioners to clear land for farming purposes on what is now known as "Newberry Road" (). This forested area eventually became part of what is now Maplewood Township (). In 1907, Jonas Peterson moved here from Canada with his family after purchasing 680 acres (~27 hectares) near Nowata Junction (). He had come across a large apple orchard while travelling through North America. After years of hard work and trial and error, Peterson developed one of Minnesota's largest orchards - which still stands today -utilizing over 2 million pounds (~10 metric tons; about 460 metric tons)of apples & pears production between 1907-1964 (). Shortly after World War II ended, farmers in Apple Valley began growing corn instead of apples because it was more profitable. Corn production continued until 1978 when crop yields slumped due to changing climate conditions and new technology developments. However, since then there have been sporadic efforts made by landowners within Apple Valley to revive orchards (), primarily through donating land or subsidizing prices for seed . During World War II, many German POWs were taken to Apple Valley for work on farms near Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. After the war, some of these POWs returned to their families and started businesses in Apple Valley such as Beechcraft Aircraft Corporation (later Boeing) which built airframes in its hangar at 4500 County Road 122; Hormel Foods Inc., later Hormel Foods Corporation (now Tyson); and JCPenney Inc., later JCPenney Co.; all three companies are still extant today with extensive operations within Apple Valley proper as well as across several thousand acres outside of it including a corporate campus adjacent to Interstate 94 known as "JCPenney Park." In addition to these larger firms there have been numerous smaller businesses over time such as: Bass Pro Shops; Target; Kwik Trip; Moon Pie Café; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Menard's Concentrated Sales Corp.; Empire Mills Incorporated (a fertilizer company); First National Bank (Ameristar Energy Services Co.) and Wildcat Savings & Loan Association among others
