During this time there were many trapping expeditions around Arapaho Lake because small animals such as beavers could not survive cold winters without food or shelter
On October 1, 1868, the first school in Apple Valley opened its doors. The school was housed in a sod building on the corner of Third and Cedar Streets. In 1901, a new school was built on Fourth Street which became known as Apple Valley High School. It served the community until 1957 when it was replaced by Apple Valley Middle School. In 1965, Apple Valley Elementary School moved to its present location on First Street which remains today as the only public elementary school in Apple Valley.
