Apple Valley is a small town in north-central Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Apple Valley" originated from the early settler families who were farmers and Native Americans. In 1847, Major John Sibley explored what would become Apple Valley and named it after his farm which he had founded in 1839 on the east side of Apple River. Sibley's holdings included much of present-day Apple Valley as well as parts of Forest Lake and Maplewood. The first post office in Apple Valley was established in 1853; it was called Galesburg, after Galesburg, Illinois. In 1857, Alexander McKay opened a general store in what is now West Side Park near where Interstate 35 crosses the river valley floor today. He became an important player in local economic development through his grocery store and real estate practices that later helped make Apple Valley one of America's most affluent small towns. McKay also donated land to establish Macdonald Gardens Park on Presque Isle Avenue between First Street and University Avenue east of Main Street in 1915 – one of only a handful of public parks ever created within city limits during that time period (the others being Washington Park). Apple Valley, Minnesota is a small town in the Saint Croix County seat of Apple Valley. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Saint Croix River. The village was founded in 1854 by Peter and Mary Ann Kincaid and named after the apple orchard that they owned. The first post office was established in 1857, and the first school was built in 1859. By 1865, there were three churches in Apple Valley- one Episcopal, one Methodist, and one Lutheran. In 1881, a railroad station was built here and this became an important center for transportation during the early 21st century when it served as a transfer point for goods between the Great Lakes region and eastern Canada. In 1907, Apple Valley had its only tornado when parts of the village were destroyed by a storm that swept across rural Saint Croix County. The damage done to homes and businesses included $5,000 worth of losses from trees snapped from their branches due to wind gusts over 50 mph. In 1924, Apple Valley became an incorporated municipality with a governing board made up of five citizens who met quarterly to manage affairs such as zoning changes and streetlights installation. This type of government structure continued until 1975 when it transitioned into an elected township form through which residents are currently voting on issues like public works projects and police jurisdiction
