The first settler in Apple Valley was John Smedley who arrived in 1854. He and his family built a cabin on the edge of what is now Apple Valley Park. The name "Apple Valley" was given to the valley by General George Armstrong Custer for his horse farm and apple orchard located in present day Apple Valley Township and North Apple Township. In 1871, Jeptha Ladd bought 8 acres (3 ha) of land east of Apple Valley from William Lyon Mackenzie for $1,000 (). Ladd named his property "Apple Hill". In 1872 he subdivided his land into 3 lots which became known as "Ladd's Hills", "Mackenzie's Prairie", and "Newlands". Apple Valley post office was established on February 17, 1893 (). The first postmaster was Mrs. Swedish (Nellie) Carlson who served until 1909 when she became supervisor under Postmaster General Frank Vanderlip (). In 1906, John Fenton started an agricultural cooperative with 11 other farmers called the Maple Leaf Cooperative Union (). This cooperative grew to be one of America's largest grain marketing operations with over 2 million bushels delivered to markets across America each year during its heyday before it went bankrupt in 1916. During World War I, apple fruit shipments totaled 1 million pounds (454 kg) to Allied forces overseas; this represented 2% of total United States exports that year . By 1919 there were over 150 apple growers operating in Apple Valley with a production capacity of 350 metric tons per annum (). The first settler in what is now Apple Valley was John Denton, who arrived in 1847. Denton named his land for his father, James Denton, who had been a settler on the same farm where he would eventually reside. In 1875, David Aikens founded Dakota City as a post office near present-day Apple Valley. Dakota City became an important stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad and began to develop into a small city with its own government and schools. In 1916, Apple Valley was incorporated as a village by order of the Minnesota Legislature after years of discussion and debate over whether or not to do so. During World War II, many American soldiers stationed at Ftibner Field (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) also lived in Apple Valley during their stay before being sent back home. One result was that many apple trees were planted in Apple Valley during this time period – one such tree still stands today! There have been few changes to the community since it first came into existence; many residents continue to live there unchanged by technology or other changes that have come about throughout Twin Cities metropolitan areas over the years. After the war ended, many farmers sold their land within town limits and moved away as rapid population growth took hold in what had once been agricultural villages such as Appleton and Waconia. The last major crop production took place during the early 1990s with a focus on corn agriculture due to changing market conditions caused by multiple freezes/thawings over that period of time
