It is the most populous city in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area and the fifth most populous city in Minnesota. The current mayor of Anoka is Rebecca Johnson, who was elected on November 3rd, 2016. The first European settlers in what is now Anoka were French Canadian trappers and fur traders from Quebec City in 1822. They named their new settlement after Mount Saint Catherine (or "Catherine's Peak"), about 20 miles (32 km) east of Montreal on the North American continent. After several years of growth and development by the early 1800s, Anoka had a population of around 2,000 people by 1825; but it declined thereafter until its peak as a small town of fewer than 5,000 people in 1890 when it became an independent municipality with its own government and school board. In 1887, Anoka became one of five cities that formed Stroudsburg Township when Minneapolis and St. Paul annexed much of rural Dakota County to form their consolidated metropolitan area – with annexations taking place acrossMinnesota – which would eventually be renamed Twin Cities after World War II had ended. Meanwhile, community activists led by Inez Wiley erected a public protest against annexations that caused many clashes between residents and police officers; these protests helped lead to increased awareness among township leaders about issues such as municipal autonomy within the larger metropolitan area. After decades of decline due to various factors including changing economic circumstances, declining population size as well as competition from neighboring municipalities outside the Twin Cities metropolitan area following mergers throughout 1989–1991; Anoka reached its high point during the late 1990s when it had over 50% minority representation on its municipality council despite having only 10% white residency rate overall within its boundaries; this represented an increase from prior levels where minorities made up no more than 1% or 2% of all council members within any incorporated municipality located within 500 miles (800 km) or less of Twin Cities).

A post office called Anoka was established in 1855, and the citizens voted to rename it after General James Wilkinson, who had led American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1857, Anoka became part of Dakota Territory when Minnesota entered the Union as a state; this change meant that Anoka county did not have its own government until 1912 when it merged with Hennepin County to form MN's second largest county by land area (after Ramsey). In 1870, territorial legislators created an incorporated town called Alexandria within Anoka Township; Alexandria became a separate municipality on December 1st of that year due to population growth and annexation from nearby Brooklyn Heights. On July 2nd of 1888 officials announced plans for a new town called Maplewood west of Rochester which would be larger than either Alexandria or Maplewood and would include farmland east of Interstate 94 between Menomonie Road and White Cloud Road (now Lyndale Avenue). When residents rejected this proposal they were invited to dissolve their townships instead but refused because they wanted more power over local affairs thantownship commissioners enjoyed.Maplewood never materialized but remains an interesting nameakescience fiction story today which locals often discuss during morning coffee or at night while watching reruns of "The World Series". In 1905, entrepreneurs named Charles Dickey and John Wessels founded Dickey's Lumber Company on Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis; business grew quickly with Plankinton lumberyards built around 1915 adjacent to Nicollet Mall later renamed Nicollet Park after Dickey’s death in 1923. This company eventually became one of America’s leading lumber interests thanks largely to its innovative marketing techniques such as truckloads “dropping blocks” off store shelves direct to customers' homes thereby driving down prices while also generating substantial profits through resale value accretion (i.e., increasing value over time based on continuous use).
