The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Anoka were traders and explorers who came from Sweden in 1634. They named their new land "Anoka". The first white settlers arrived in 1852 and started farming the area that includes present-day Anoka and Elk River townships. The first school was built in 1854. In 1876, the town was incorporated as a city; it had a population of about 6,000 people when it became a city Limits district on November 1, 1980. On January 1, 1990, the City of Anoka annexed parts of Elk River Township which had a population of 797 as well as most of rural Goodhue County west of Interstate 94 until then including portions of Maplewood limestone farms east of I-94 that were abandoned due to enrollment declines among students at those schools) In 2007, Minneapolis/St Paul Mayor Randal Quarles announced his intention to reduce its size by up to 25% through annexation into Minneapolis/St Paul if he becomes mayor for a second term starting on July 1st 2008 through December 31st 2009 – this would have imperiled Anoka's future since it would have been unable to annex into Minneapolis without being approved by the City Council (the council has no power over annexation). Despite assurances from Quarles that no such reduction would occur without City Council approval and despite pleas from Mayor Miro Weinberger (an opponent), many residents across Anka voted against annexation two years later when they passed an ordinance limiting their ability to do so via referendum ballot measure ballots placed inside all business establishments within city limits regardless of whether or not they carried out any other house rules related thereto (a condition precedent for annexation). The history of Anoka goes back more than 180 years; its founders arrived here from Norway Settlers Association established at Mankato in 1850. In 1855, Captain John Worthy founded the first post office here - it was renamed Anoka on May 24th that year with mail service starting from Mankato! Today there are numerous buildings dating back to this period still standing within the limits of Anoka County: both public buildings ( courthouse and jail) as well as private homes and businesses which served those living here during those early days - some have been preserved even today! One such building is the old Methodist Church located on 5th Avenue North just east of Interstate 94; it was built between 1865-1867 by lumber baron David Mahlon Mitchell II - one of the largest land owners in what became Minnesota! One also remembers another pioneer from this time Period: Mrs. John Prentice (wife of Hudson Phinney Prentice), who had come to America with her husband Thorstein Pedersen met Anna Jonsdatter Vigeland when they were both working at Hennepin’s Mills near St Cloud – she together with her five children came West across country arriving at Fort Snelling via boat on September 16th 1849!!! Some interesting facts about Mrs Prentice include that she herself rode horses all the way westward...and that when finally arrivng at Fort Snelling she found out that her husband had died three weeks earlier while exploring Dakota Territory!!!
