Anoka, Minnesota is located in the eastern Twin Cities metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1858 and became a consolidated municipality in 1958. It has a population of 154,898 as of the 2010 census. Anoka is one of the most diverse cities in Minnesota and home to many cultures including Scandinavian, Finnish, German, French Canadian, Italian, American Indian, Somali and East African descent. The city's economy is based on education, health care and manufacturing. The first optical devices were created here in Anoka by inventor James Akeley. In 1879 Akeley developed an improved telescope which he named the "Akeley Telescope." He also invented a lens that could be focused using mirrors instead of arms. This new device allowed for improved imaging capabilities for astronomy research. In 1905 another inventor named Harry Huggins developed an additional lens design that would become known as the Huggins Lens system. This technology allowed physicians to read medical charts without having to view them directly. This innovation helped improve patient care by allowing doctors to see more details on patients' symptoms without disturbing their images with direct contact with the skin. In 1929 Harry Evers developed what would become known as the Evers-Odekker Mirror System which allowed for magnification of small objects up to 20 times using a single mirror! This innovative technology made it possible for scientists and engineers to see detailed anatomical illustrations at close range without having to view them through large telescopes or microscopes
