Anoka is a city in southwest Minnesota, United States. The population was 30,895 at the 2010 census. Anoka is a major suburb of Minneapolis-St. Paul and it lies within the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The city is named after Anoka County, Minnesota, which was part of the Dakota Territory when it was created in 1868. It has a humid continental climate with average precipitation of 1007 mm (39 inches). The city began as part of what would become Minneapolis on May 27, 1856 when an act of Congress named the town after General David Rice Anzick who had been instrumental in organizing and leading the White River War against Mexico. Prior to this time settlements were clustered around Lake Calhoun where fur traders lived and shipbuilding took place. Rice became interested in land east of the Mississippi River and bought 6 square miles from John Akeley for $5200 in 1857. The first settler arrived just north of present day downtown on February 24, 1860 with his family consisting of six young children: Alfred Dibbley, infant daughter; Helen Dibbley (born November 15th 1860), wife Ann Ramsey; two brothers James Purdy (1827-1911) and William Purdy (1829-1899), co-owners of Waukesha County’s first mill plying traffic on Superior Creek; Lawrence Hennepin (May 25th 1830 -December 9th 1912); Mary Ewing Arlis (January 21st 1848 – December 3rd 1913). They erected their log cabin near what is now First Avenue S., marked by an early postmark that read “Ft Worth” on July 6th 1861 because they were not yet able to obtain permission from General George Armstrong Custer to build permanent buildings there until that date. The town site was surveyed by prominent Mankato attorney James Fenton on January 13th 1863 under direction from then Governor Alexander Ramsey who had just assumed office following Ramsey’s victory over thirty thousand Native Americans at Black Hills Wars Battle four days earlier on December 10th 1862 led by Major Pierre Elliott Trudeau . After many delays due to disagreements about boundaries between agencies including those between Ulysses S Grant’s Department Of Indian Affairs and newly formed military commander Maj.-Gen George Armstrong Custer’s 7th Cavalry Regiment under Lt.-Col Charles de laFontaine , final platting took place on April 26 th 1865 when Fenton approved issuance thereof being bounded northerly by 5 mi long Cedar St., westerly by 2 mi wide Fifty Mile Rd., southerly along 1/4 mi wide right main street southwesterly along 1/4 mi wide left side street corner with University Ave.. This alignment would remain unchanged until Red Wing acquired much more land southward including what are now Third Street NE & Interstate 35E Streets in 1997 while Anoka obtained almost all its current borders through annexations or other acquisitions during recent decades including most recently 4 blocks eastward along I-35E from University Ave.. Anoka grew rapidly from its incorporation as a townsite in 1863 until 1890 when it peaked at nearly 50 residents per square mile thanks largely to new immigration via railroads such as the Duluth Iron Range Railwayowned by Samuel Inslee which linked up with ferries crossing Lake Superior bringing workers downriver for processing into goods dispatched throughout much Upper Great Lakes region before heading back upriver for sale or use elsewhereabouts
