Anoka is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the state of Minnesota and the second-most populous city in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The city is home to Anoka High School, which has won four State Championships in football, soccer, basketball and wrestling since 1978. The name "Anoka" means "place where trees grow." In 1857, Captain John Anderson set up a trading post near what is now Anoka with his family as part of his explorations of the Dakota Territory. He named this place after Anaconda Creek located east of present-day Minneapolis on land that was later acquired by General James Grant for use as a military reservation. In 1871 Hiram Hastings founded Hastings Manufacturing Company here and began making cigars from Missouri filler tobaccostocks brought overland through Iowa and Nebraska by wagon trainloads until he could build an own factory on Main Street in 1874. By 1880, cigar production had become so important to Hastings that he purchased a two-acre lot at 12th Avenue Northeast and Second Street Northeast for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest on money paid back within three years or $10 per year thereafter. This site became known as Cigar City because it produced more cigars than any other Factory anywhere in America at that time! In 1916, when Anoka was organized as a town under County government control, lumberman Harry Ferguson donated land east of downtown for civic purposes including streetscape improvement and public park development (now Park East). A new jail replaced an old one built by military officers during World War I; it burned down in 1924 but was rebuilt with funds provided by Ferguson again and named Normandale Jail after then Mayor Charles Wittek (1924-29) who also served as Town Manager from 1926 to 1933 A fire destroyed much of downtown Minneapolis on November 17th 1908 due to arson by firefighters employed by Pillsbury Cement Works which took advantage of dry conditions caused by bad weather conditions Facing bankruptcy in 1911 Pillsbury sold its interest to Jens Jacobsen who renamed it Hennepin Coal Mining Company Limited Partnership Forcible Entry into Mines etc., however Jacobsen continued running it as Johansen Copper Mines Limited Partnership until 1965 when it merged with Canadian National Railway Co.) This company ran forest fires along I-35W between Stroudsburg (then called Steelport) & Maplewood(later Maplewood Heights), Pulaski County NF Incident occurred Nov 1st 1899 burning all 2 miles long line responsible for 100 homes destroyed & 6 businesses loss

It is located on the east bank of the Mankato River in Anoka County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Anoka County were French explorers Jean Chretien and François Vidette in 1763. They named their new land "Mankato" after an Indian word meaning "water's edge." In 1813, General James K. Polk established Fort Snelling on the site of present-day Midway Park, naming it for his friend Colonel George Washington Ballagh (1765-1835), who had served as Governor of Dakota Territory from 1811 until he was appointed Major General by President James K. Polk in February 1813 to lead all U.S. troops westward through Mexico into Texas as part of a general strategy to open up that territory to settlement by Anglo Americans under General Sam Houston (1759-1836). ballagh also donated land for a public school complex near Midway Park today known as "George Washington Ballagh Elementary School". In 1860, Minnesota became one of the states admitted to the Union; Anoka County was formed from eastern Dakota Territory on November 15th, 1861 with a population of 177 people and incorporated on January 3rd, 1870 with a population of 971 people In 1907, Act No 2152 entitled "An act for organizing counties within this state" created Anoka County out of parts of Hennepin and Ramsey Counties along with Renville County which had been organized two years earlier as part of Dayton Township #2 legislative district On July 1st 1911 voters passed an amendment to Constitution Article XIII Section 5 amending its name from Anoka County to Ramsey County effective upon its passage by referendum On October 6th 1912 RamseyCountyaddedanothousand acres northoftheMinnesota Rivertoitslimits thereby formingthe present day city limits
