The first permanent settler in Anoka was James Wilkinson in 1836. He platted what is now Anoka Township on the east side of Iron Range Lake and named it after his home town (now Winnipeg, Manitoba). Stephens founded an agricultural colony called " Stacy's Prairie" near present-day Minneapolis on the west side of Iron Range Lake adjacent to Anoka Township; this colony failed within two years because most settlers were unable to grow crops successfully there due to lack of water resources and extreme cold weather conditions during winter months. Stevens Point entrepreneur Antoine Chouteau purchased Chouteau's failed colony for $10 per acre ($270 per km²) in 1855 from Stephens; he renamed it Chouteauville after himself. The first post office was established at Chouteauville on July 1, 1857; it was naturalized as part of Dakota Territory on December 12, 1862 following its admission into the Union as a new United States territory following Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as president that day. In 1865, Danish immigrants Erik Olsen and Ole Olsen started a small farm near where modern-day East Maple Avenue stands; they called their farm "Næsbyen". On January 8, 1865–the date various sources list as when Anoka became a city–Erik Olsen died suddenly while working his farm; Ole Olsen took over until he died six weeks later from an illness unrelated to farming operations that he contracted while living on Næsbyen(). After Erik Olsen's death, Ole Olsen's widow continued farming Næsbyen until her death in 1889 (). The original City Hall building which remains today located at 5th Street & Lyndale Avenue served as both ANOKA CITY HALL AND THE MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL FROM 1897 TO 1961 WHEN IT WAS REPLACED BY THE NEW ANOKA CITY COUNCIL BUILDING AFTER THE EFFECT OF A LEGISLATIVE BILL THAT AUTHORIZED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ANOKA AS A CITY ON FEBRUARY 9TH OF THAT YEAR (#MNLH710). From 1951-1961 the city hall building housed both the MN State Capitol and Mayor’s Office before being replaced by current structure.....................................................................
